The management tactic known as DFSS, or Design for Six Sigma is a discipline which is rapidly growing in popularity with Six Sigma aligned businesses. In Six Sigma, certain procedures are identified and enhanced, whereas DFSS studies the needs and incorporates that into the initial solution. DFSS is associated with product development, specifically initial product development. Rather than concentrating on the enhancement of existing procedures, it relates to the creation of the procedures.

Other terms associated with DFSS are DMADV which stands for Define ” Measure ” Analyze ” Design ” Verify and the conventional DMAIC, which stands for Define ” Measure ” Analyze ” Improve ” Control of Six Sigma procedures, that stresses on the constant enhancement of production, generally happening after the first system planning and production have been mostly finished.

DFSS is different from other procedures in that it is implemented at the beginning of the production process rather than later. By being the initial architect and engineer of the business processes from the onset, it allows the business the structure it needs to grow right from the beginning. The resulting solutions will offer the client better production and general business experiences.

The initial creation of the DFSS procedure came about because Six Sigma companies realized the need to standardize product development procedures, avoiding the need to recreate them. The DFSS and DMAIC are similar processes, but they work differently and at different stages of the production schedule. Simply, DMAIC can be considered a system used for back end scrutiny, while DFSS implements plans better utilized in front end procedures.

Overall, the DMAIC roadmap employs a method of enhancing existing procedures while DFSS begins at the front and creates appropriate procedures, based on feedback from clients and suppliers.
