Happiness and Health - Is There a Connection?
When talking to Bernhard or taking in one of his shows, the emotion that always comes up is one of happiness.
Of course, there are other things than my good friend, Bernhard, that make me happy. I love to travel. I love to help people. In fact, I became interested in how happiness affects health for this reason.
One recent study involving almost ten thousand Australians showed that those with a high happiness in their lives reported overall good health for years to follow.
Age, smoking, fitness level and alcohol, amazingly enough, were not factors.
So, does that mean that those who are happy are happy because of their health or visa versa? Perhaps it’s a bit of both.
Looking at those in my life, both personal and professional, I can tell you, those with high stress have all kinds of medical issues, where my less stressed and happy acquaintances are relatively stress free.
I won’t go so far as to say that bad health is because of a perpetual bad mood, but the mind is powerful and should not be underestimated.
Happiness is also relative and so one should have some perspective as to what makes him or her happy and how that bears upon health.
A good way to help identify what makes you happy vs. what doesn’t is to be conscious of when you are feeling happy and when you aren’t. Jot these times down and see if you find a pattern. Are you always stressed out at the office? Does watching TV for six hours a day make you happy?
Yes, we all know that physical and mental relaxation and well-being is key for an overall happy life but how do we get started and once started, retain these healthy habits?
Even good change is change and none of us human beings (for all the talk about how adaptive we are) like it. The same old rut is just easier. The key is to make a plan and then inact it!
These modern times are a challenge for all of us. Happy news is rarely reported and if it is, we dont tend to read it. The key is finding the good in, if not all things, at least most things and keeping a positive attitude.
