How to Be an Assertive Communicator?

The question to answer here is how to have good communication skills. What can we do to upgrade our communication skills?

What you need to do is to become an assertive communicator. To be assertive, you should build mutual understanding with other people. You need to find a solution that can satisfy both of you.

Being assertive means you don’t avoid conflicts by being passive. Neither do you try to manipulate other people by being aggressive. If you are assertive, you don’t hide what you are thinking and feeling.

An essential thing to remember as an assertive communicator is you are eager to understand others before asking to be understood. You don’t mind to see from other people’s point of view.

Clearly, being an assertive communicator takes effort. You should be able to listen first before stating what you want.

In the long term, though, being assertive is highly beneficial. That happens because being assertive allows you to build trust with other people.

If you want to be an assertive communicator, you should first look at how you communicate. Have you been open about what you are thinking or feeling? Have you tried to understand first?

If you answer these questions with no then most likely you are not assertive. But realizing this is good because it encourages you to take action and change.

What you should do is listening to what your partner is saying. Not just hearing what is being said, but really listen to it. Try to understand his point of view and his feeling.

You can then find points of similarities between you. Since you try to understand first, finding the points of similarities shouldn’t be too hard. From the similarities you find, you can find a solution that works well for both of you.

Keep trying to find a win-win solution and you will be a good communicator.
