Setting Yourself Up for Outstanding Performance
It does take a special mentality to start a business. Call it guts, if you like, but you have to be able and willing to step out of the normal. You also need to be willing and able to be assume roles that may not be of interest, but are vital for the start up of your business.
When you look at the roles involved with any business you can compare it to a stage production. There are many characters, some more predominant that others, as well as those in the backstage supporting roles. It takes all these roles to make the production a success.
Your product is also one of the characters in this story you are producing. Whether it is product or service, the product must take the spotlight at least some of the time. How much have you developed this character? What will draw others to this member of the cast, make them want to pay attention?
The main character is not a one-man show, and no one is going to be nominated at that Emmy award show without the support of those behind the scenes. You need a director to tie together the script with the steps along the way. You also need the stagehands, and the willingness to do the work to set that stage.
Perspective is a great tool for any business. You need to have that five thousand foot viewpoint to look at the bigger picture. You also need the precision and focus to look at the details, how everything fits together. Pennies do count, and that little bit here and little bit there can add up to define your profitability.
Its easy for any of us to dream of walking up to the podium and accepting that award for best performance, but realistically there are many roles involved in getting to that point. When you see the importance of each phase and activity involved in starting your business, you will see that each aspect serves you in your success.
